As the daughter of a Marine veteran of WWII (Pacific/Battle of Guadalcanal), I was educated first hand about the hardships and battles my Dad encountered there. Yes, I was my Daddy's girl - (and a T-type personality.) He never ceased to amaze me when I was growing up. He had volunteered for active duty, along with his brother and cousin. They all chose a different branch of the military - Marines, Air Force and Army. The conversations I was privy to as a little girl growing up - were my lessons from a true hero about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (usually while he was teaching me target shooting and how to fish - to this day I prefer to be outdoors in the woods, the mountains or the water - a la learning to be a "special force" from about the age of five.) To have been able to listen to my heroes for years and to have actually been raised by these incredible WWII American heroes astounds and humbles me every day, particularly through these difficult days of dealing with multiple injuries acquired over the years. They effectively had their own support group and I guess I was there for a reason. I know when I'd ask questions they were very careful about how they answered them since I was very small and inquisitive. Only now do I hope that my being there gave them some sort of comfort and perspective about the hardships they endured (particularly my Dad on Guadalcanal.) I carry those memories of my deceased heroes deep in my heart - they have all passed on. Memorial Day has a very special meaning to me, since my family can trace its roots back to the Revolutionary War.
One just can't know the future. But I do know this -- through all the hard work, grief, heartache, pain and suffering -- some call it just plain extra stubbornness -- we WILL achieve VICTORY in all venues against terrorism and tyrants. We will never, ever quit -- those of us who FIGHT HATE EVERY DAY. One must be taught to hate and such hatreds affect those who teach hate even more than those who are taught to hate. We're all family. At times my life has been extremely difficult. But because of my dad, a brave man who raised me and trained me with his first hand knowledge of exactly what is at stake every day, I would not trade one bit of the heart-ache and adversity I've encountered to be someone else - because I would never want to give up the knowledge he imparted to me. It's a legacy of the defense of freedom for all and it remains priceless to me. Military operations cannot do the hard political work that lies ahead for Afghans and Iraqis. It is their turn now to declare their own victories by getting all involved in the political solutions. All we've done is provided them an opportunity. We did not sell them on taking control of their own destinies -- they VOTED to buy self-determination. Yes there is lots of hard work ahead for all of us. Maybe there is some truth to the saying that no good deed goes unpunished. However, there is an eternal truth that evil deeds will certainly be punished -- either in the here and now -- or in the presence of our creator. Once in awhile it would be nice for those who have given so much, as well as their families, to receive some measure of freedom, peace and prosperity while here. I know that's been our objective. Don't let anything break you down -- there are many people around who support you, have not forgotten you or your families, or the terrible situations all are encountering on a daily basis.
Clare Booth Luce, diplomat, once said, "There are no hopeless situations; there are only men who have grown HELPLESS about them." [My emphasis added.] It's so true that sometimes success in life, yours and others', is determined not by what you do when everything is going right, but by the agility you demonstrate in dealing with adversities - that's true leadership - no matter who is practicing it.
Thank you to all of our service personnel who have given their lives. We will never forget them and their families in the grief they must bear.
